In my recent work, conceptualized since January 2018, I explore the liminal space between painting and sculpture, and communicate my interest in the sculptural dimension of painting. Inspired by the work of artists such as Harry Holtzman, Sam Gilliam, Ann Truitt, and Phyllida Barlow, my series of paintings in the round are the result of extensive use of layering and overlapping. I combine fragments of my representational paintings created between 1995-2003, nonrepresentational renderings produced between 2003-2014, and current articles from various newspapers. Moreover, I juxtapose hard edge and painterly approaches, flat and illusory space to convey a multidimensional sculptural quality. Rather than a two-dimensional canvas, I opt for different sized pillars that range from 3 feet to 6 feet as the surface and support for my paintings. At once painting and sculpture, my sculptural paintings transgress the flatness of the picture plane and climb into the space of the viewer. The final renditions of fragmented and layered histories enact the ways in which I experience my contemporary moment constructed, in part, from multiple temporalities excavated from my past.
